How to calculate GPA

Multiply each course’s credits by its grade value, add those grade points, then divide by the credits that count toward GPA. Letter mode uses A+ = 4.3, A = 4, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2, C− = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1, D− = 0.7 and F = 0. P and NP appear in total credits but do not enter the GPA denominator.

Cumulative GPA and your GPA report

Add prior GPA and completed credits to combine an earlier record with your new courses. Group courses into semesters to see each semester’s GPA, credits and grade points, followed by cumulative results. Percentage mode averages the percentage grades directly; point-value mode averages the numeric values you enter.

GPA planning calculator

Required future GPA = [target GPA × (current credits + additional credits) − current GPA × current credits] ÷ additional credits. Use the same grading scale for current and target GPA. The result can exceed your school’s maximum, indicating that the target cannot be reached with only those additional credits.

School grading policies

Schools differ in their grade scales, repeated-course rules and treatment of pass/fail work. This estimate does not replace an official transcript. Use point-value mode for your school’s own numeric scale; this calculator does not automatically apply AP/IB weighting or repeat-course replacement.

The University of Maryland sources in References use A+ = 4.0 and truncate GPA to three decimal places; this calculator uses A+ = 4.3 and rounds to three decimal places. Its NP exclusion is a calculator assumption, not a rule established by those sources.

Frequently asked questions

Does an A+ count as 4.0 or 4.3?

Letter mode assigns 4.3. For a school that caps A+ at 4.0, select point value and enter 4.

Does pass/fail affect GPA?

P and NP do not contribute grade points or counted credits. Their course credits still appear in the report’s total credits.

Does percentage mode convert to a 4.0 GPA?

No. It calculates the credit-weighted average of your percentage grades.

Can I combine several semesters?

Yes. Enable semester grouping and add semesters; include prior GPA only for credits not already entered in those semesters.
