How much gravel do I need?

Multiply the area to cover by the layer depth, using matching units. This gravel estimator accepts a known area, a rectangle, or a circle. A rectangle uses length × width; a circle uses π × (diameter ÷ 2)². The gravel coverage calculator assumes a flat surface with an even layer.

Gravel calculator formula

Cubic yards = square feet × depth in inches ÷ 324. Weight = volume × bulk density. For example, 200 sq ft at 3 inches deep is 50 cubic feet, or about 1.852 cubic yards (1.416 m³). At the gravel preset density of 1,680 kg/m³, that is approximately 2,379 kg or 2.622 US short tons.

Stone calculator: density and weight

Use the stone calculator for gravel, gravel with sand, dry sand, or wet sand. The bulk density presets are 1,680, 1,920, 1,500, and 1,900 kg/m³ respectively. These are estimates, not material specifications. For a supplier-specific product, choose custom density and enter pounds per cubic foot, kilograms per cubic meter, or grams per cubic centimeter.

Gravel cost calculator and bags

Enter a material price per volume, weight, or bag. Bulk cost uses the unrounded quantity. Bag cost uses the number of whole bags needed, rounded up. Bag sizes may be specified by volume or weight. One US short ton is 2,000 pounds; a metric ton is 1,000 kilograms. Delivery, labor, tax, compaction, and extra material are not added.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use this as a pea gravel calculator?

Yes. Calculate the volume from area and depth, then select custom density using your supplier’s bulk density for pea gravel to estimate weight.

How does the gravel driveway calculator estimate tonnage?

Measure the driveway area and planned gravel depth. The gravel tonnage calculator multiplies volume by density and reports US short tons and metric tons. It does not add a compaction allowance.

How much area does one cubic yard of gravel cover?

At a depth of 3 inches, one cubic yard covers 108 sq ft (about 10.03 m²). Divide 324 by the depth in inches to get the coverage in square feet.

Can I use this gravel estimator for a circular bed?

Yes. Choose Circle and enter its diameter and the desired layer depth. Diameter is the full width across the center, not the radius.

Why does gravel weight vary?

Stone type, particle size, void spaces, water content, and packing affect bulk density. Use your supplier’s density when available and confirm order quantities with them.

How are gravel bags counted?

Divide the required volume or weight by the amount in one bag, then round up to a whole bag. Choose per bag and enter a bag size and a price greater than $0 to see the bag count and estimated material cost.
