How the pace calculator works
Pace, time, and distance are tied together by one formula: pace = time ⁄ distance. Know any two and you can find the third. This pace calculator works for running, walking, and biking, and has six tools:
- Find pace: enter a time and a distance to get your pace in every unit.
- Find time: enter a distance and a pace to get your finish time.
- Find distance: enter a time and a pace to see how far you will go.
- Section paces: enter the time at several points of a run to get the pace of each section.
- Pace converter: convert a pace or speed, such as mph to min per mile.
- Finish time: predict your finish from the distance and time so far.
Times can be typed as h:mm:ss, m:ss, or seconds, and leading zeros are optional, so 5:3 means 5 minutes 3 seconds. For example, 4 miles in 32:00 is a pace of 32 ⁄ 4 = 8:00 per mile, which is 7.5 mph or about 4:58 per kilometer.
Running pace calculator results
- Your pace in every unit: minutes per mile and per kilometer, mph, km/h, and meters or yards per minute and per second.
- Race times at that pace, from 400 meters to the marathon.
- Even splits for each full mile and kilometer of your distance (up to 200), so you know where you should be at each marker.
- For the splits tool, a table and chart of each section's pace and your pace so far.
Marathon and half marathon pace
A marathon is 42.195 km, or about 26.22 miles, and a half marathon is half that. Pick the race from the list under the distance field to fill it in. At 8:00 per mile, a marathon takes about 3:29:45 and a half marathon about 1:44:53. To finish a marathon in 4 hours, you need to average about 9:09 per mile (5:41 per km).
Treadmill pace chart: how to convert mph to min per mile
Divide 60 by the speed in mph to get minutes per mile. For 7.5 mph, 60 ⁄ 7.5 = 8 minutes per mile. Going the other way, divide 60 by your pace in minutes: 10:00 per mile is 6 mph. This is handy for treadmill runs, which usually show speed instead of pace.
| Speed | Pace per mile | Pace per km |
|---|---|---|
| 5 mph | 12:00 per mile | 7:27 per km |
| 6 mph | 10:00 per mile | 6:13 per km |
| 7 mph | 8:34 per mile | 5:20 per km |
| 7.5 mph | 8:00 per mile | 4:58 per km |
| 8 mph | 7:30 per mile | 4:40 per km |
| 10 mph | 6:00 per mile | 3:44 per km |
Frequently asked questions
What is a good running pace?
It depends on age, fitness, and distance. Many recreational runners run an easy pace of roughly 9 to 12 minutes per mile, while a brisk walk is closer to 15 to 20 minutes per mile. Compare yourself with your own past runs rather than a single number.
How do I use this as a 5K or half marathon pace calculator?
Divide your 5K time by 3.107 miles or by 5 kilometers. A 25:00 5K is about 8:03 per mile or 5:00 per kilometer. Use the Find pace tab with the 5K race selected to get it in every unit. For a half marathon, pick it from the race list and use the Find time tab to see your finish time at a target pace, such as 1:44:53 at 8:00 per mile.
How does the finish time prediction work?
It assumes you keep your average pace so far for the whole race. For example, 3 miles in 27:45 is 9:15 per mile, so a 13.1-mile half marathon would take about 2:01:11. Most runners slow down late in a long race, so treat it as a best case.
What are splits?
Splits are the times for each part of a run, usually each mile or kilometer. Even splits mean the same pace throughout; negative splits mean the second half is faster than the first.
Limitations
The calculator assumes a steady pace. Hills, wind, heat, and fatigue change real pace, so race predictions are estimates, not guarantees.
