How the tip calculator works
Enter the bill amount before tax and tip, then choose a tip percentage. The calculator multiplies the bill by that percentage to get the tip amount, then adds it to the bill to get your total.
tip amount = bill × (tip % ÷ 100)total = bill + tip amount
If you're splitting the check, enter the number of people (2 or more). The tip and total are then divided evenly to show what each person owes.
A note on tipping and taxes
This calculator gives an estimate for splitting a bill — it isn't tax advice. Tipping norms vary by service and region, and workers who receive tips generally must report them as taxable income.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip?
In the United States, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is customary at full-service restaurants, with 20% common for great service. Delivery, rideshare, and other services often use lower percentages — check the context before picking a rate.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Most etiquette guidance calculates the tip on the pre-tax bill amount. Enter the subtotal before sales tax into the Bill field for the standard calculation.
How is the amount per person calculated?
Once you enter a number of people, the calculator divides the total tip and the total bill evenly by that number. It doesn't account for people ordering different amounts — for that, split each person's own subtotal separately and tip on each.
Is tipping required in the US?
Tipping isn't legally required in most situations, but it is a strong social expectation in the US restaurant and service industry, where many workers are paid a lower base wage with the expectation that tips make up the difference.
