Days calculator and day counter
This days calculator counts the days between dates and finds the date a given number of days or business days from a start date. Use the Days Between Dates tab as a day counter or day count calculator: it returns the total days plus the weekend days, weekdays, holidays, and business days in the range. Use the Add or Subtract Days tab as a days from date calculator for deadlines, shipping windows, notice periods, and due dates.
How many days between two dates?
The calculator subtracts the start date from the end date. By default the start date is counted and the end date is not, which matches how most people count elapsed time: from Monday to Friday is 4 days. Check Include the end date to count both dates, which adds one day—useful for things like hotel nights versus days of a trip, or a promotion that runs through its last day.
For example, from November 2, 2026 to January 15, 2027 is 74 days. If you enter the end date before the start date, the calculator swaps them and still counts the days between.
Business days calculator (working days)
As a working days calculator, it counts business days—also called working days—which are weekdays (Monday through Friday) that are not holidays. The calculator counts Saturdays and Sundays as weekend days, then, if you turn on holidays, subtracts each selected holiday that lands on a weekday in the range.
When a federal holiday with a fixed date (New Year's Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Veterans Day, or Christmas Day) falls on a Saturday, it is observed on the Friday before; when it falls on a Sunday, it is observed on the Monday after. The calculator applies this rule, so July 4, 2026, a Saturday, takes Friday, July 3 off instead. Other holidays and your custom holidays are counted on their actual date and only reduce business days when that date is a weekday.
In the Add or Subtract Days tab, check Count business days only to skip weekends—and holidays, if selected—when counting forward or backward. The start date is never counted, so 10 business days after a Friday lands on the second Friday after it when there are no holidays in between.
Holidays included
The holiday list covers the 11 US federal holidays plus Black Friday, Christmas Eve, and New Year's Eve, which many employers also give off. Black Friday, Christmas Eve, and New Year's Eve are unchecked by default. You can add up to 10 custom holidays that repeat on the same date every year, such as a company anniversary or a state holiday.
- New Year's Day — January 1
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day — third Monday in January
- Presidents' Day (Washington's Birthday) — third Monday in February
- Memorial Day — last Monday in May
- Juneteenth — June 19 (from 2021)
- Independence Day — July 4
- Labor Day — first Monday in September
- Columbus Day — second Monday in October
- Veterans Day — November 11
- Thanksgiving Day — fourth Thursday in November
- Christmas Day — December 25
Today's holiday rules are applied to every year in the range, except that Juneteenth is only counted from 2021, the year it became a federal holiday. One-time federal closures granted by executive order, such as an extra day off on Christmas Eve, are not included. State holidays and company-specific closures vary, so add them as custom holidays when they matter.
Frequently asked questions
How do I count days between dates by hand?
Count the days left in the start month, add the full days of every month in between, then add the day number of the end date. From March 20 to May 5: 11 days left in March (31 − 20), 30 days in April, and 5 days in May make 46 days.
How many days until a date?
Enter today's date as the start date and the future date—a birthday, vacation, or deadline—as the end date in the Days Between Dates tab. The result is the number of days until that date, not counting today, along with how many of them are weekdays and business days.
How many business days are in a year?
A year has 260 to 262 weekdays. Subtracting the 11 federal holidays leaves roughly 249 to 251 business days, depending on the year and how many holidays fall on weekends.
Does the day count include the start date?
In the Days Between Dates tab, the start date is counted and the end date is not, unless you check Include the end date. In the Add or Subtract Days tab, the start date is not counted: 1 day after Monday is Tuesday.
Can I count weekends only or weekdays only?
Yes. The Days Between Dates result lists weekend days and weekdays separately, and business days when holidays are turned on.
