Start time

Examples: 8 or 8:30 with AM/PM; 23:00 uses 24-hour time. Seconds are ignored.

End time

Examples: 8 or 8:30 with AM/PM; 23:00 uses 24-hour time. Seconds are ignored.

Without dates, an earlier end time is treated as the following day. Dated times use calendar time without time-zone or daylight-saving adjustments.

Calculate hours between two times

Enter a start and end time using a 12-hour clock and select AM or PM. You can also enter an hour alone, such as 8, or a 24-hour value such as 23:00. For hours above 12, AM/PM is ignored. One-digit minutes are accepted, a minute value of 60 carries into the next hour, and any seconds portion is ignored. The hours calculator converts each time to minutes after midnight and subtracts the start from the end. If the end is earlier, it assumes the end falls on the following day.

Time duration between two dates

Choose dated times for intervals lasting more than one day. Enter both calendar dates and times. The end must be on or after the start. The result includes total hours and minutes, decimal hours, total minutes, and a days/hours/minutes breakdown.

Decimal hours equal total minutes divided by 60. For example, 8 hours 30 minutes is 8.5 hours, not 8.30 hours.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate an overnight interval?

In time-only mode, enter an earlier end time. For example, 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM is 8 hours. Use dated times to specify a longer interval.

What do 12:00 AM and 12:00 PM mean?

12:00 AM is midnight; 12:00 PM is noon.

Are breaks deducted?

No. Results show the full elapsed interval. Subtract unpaid breaks separately when estimating working hours.

Do identical times mean 24 hours?

In time-only mode they mean zero hours. To represent a full day, select dated times and set the end date to the next day.

Calendar time limitations

Dates use a uniform 24-hour calendar day. This calculator does not select a time zone or adjust for daylight-saving transitions. It estimates clock time, which may differ from elapsed physical time across such transitions. Decimal hours are displayed to at most six fractional digits.
