How this dice roller works

This online dice roller lets you roll a die, or a whole handful of virtual dice, without physical dice. The 6-sided dice tab rolls up to 100 standard dice and shows each face with its pips. The custom dice tab rolls dice with any number of sides from 2 to 1,000, so it works as a d20 roller and a DnD dice roller for a d4, d8, d10, d12 or d100, as well as for shapes that do not exist as real dice.

Every die is rolled independently: each face from 1 up to the number of sides has the same chance of landing, and one die never affects another. Random values that would favor some faces over others are discarded and redrawn, so a d6 gives each face exactly a 1 in 6 chance.

What the results show

When you roll two or more dice, the result lists every die along with the sum and the product of all the dice. The roll is also shown in dice notation, where 2d6 means two 6-sided dice and 1d20 means a single 20-sided die.

The average roll of one die is its number of sides plus one, divided by two: 3.5 for a d6 and 10.5 for a d20. Multiply that by the number of dice to get the total you should expect over many rolls, such as 7 for 2d6.

Frequently asked questions

Is this dice roller fair?

Yes. Whether you roll a die or roll dice by the hundred, each face has an equal probability on every roll, and earlier rolls have no effect on later ones. Streaks still happen by chance, just as they do with real dice.

How do I roll a d20 or other DnD dice?

Open the custom dice tab, set Sides per die to 20 and choose how many dice to roll. Use 4, 8, 10, 12 or 100 sides for the other dice used in tabletop role-playing games.

What is the most likely total when rolling two dice?

With two 6-sided dice the most likely total is 7, because six of the 36 possible combinations add up to it. Totals of 2 and 12 are the least likely, with one combination each.

Why does a shared link show the same roll?

A shared link stores the dice settings and the sequence used for that roll, so the recipient sees the same dice. Click Roll dice for a new roll.
